As an increasing number of Caernarfon's buildings became neglected, run-down and empty, Galeri Caernarfon Cyf (formerly known as Cwmni Tref Caernarfon) was set up as an independent Town Development Trust in 1992 and began by taking on the challenging task of transforming and refurbishing some of Caernarfon's biggest eyesores. To date, the Trust has renovated and refurbished over twenty neglected and vacant properties in the town, which are now occupied by tenants.
Galeri Caernarfon Cyf is an independent and private company, which is limited by guarantee. The company was set up to meet the following objective:
“To pursue sustainable projects in a creative way in order to realise the cultural, economic and environmental potential of the local community and its environs”
The company is not a part of any local authority or any other organisation.
Since it began, the company has grown from strength to strength and is now responsible for establishing and implementing numerous projects and schemes within the local community. The Trust's busy work programme includes property development, implementing Adwy Cyf schemes (Agency role), setting up and managing SBARC!, Galeri's Arts Project and owners of Galeri, the brand new £7.5million Creative Enterprise Centre at the town's Victoria Dock in 2005.
The opening of Galeri marked a significant development for the arts and creative industries in North Wales.
It took the
Trust 10 years to complete the work on this building from when the
idea of creating a Creative Enterprise Centre was first presented
to the company's Board in 1995.
